ALPACA

The Alpaca is a domesticated species of South American camelid. It resembles a small llama in appearance. This beautiful animal is native to the level heights of the Andes or “Altiplano” at an altitude of 3800 mts above sea level. Mainly in Northern Bolivia and Peru, as well as in Chile and Argentina.

Many think that the alpaca is a hybrid between the llama and the guanaco. Alpacas were not bred to be beasts of burden but were bred specifically for their fiber. The Tiawanacotas, native to the Bolivian Altipano, have bred this camelid long before the Incas, who later adopted their breading.

In our days, thousands of native Andean families are the main alpaca breeders, therefore, becoming the main providers for this precious natural fiber used for making knitted and woven items, much as wool is. These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide variety of textiles and ponchos among others.
